Mustard Seed Beginnings - Opening a New Boutique in Magnolia Texas

Jennifer Tolbert

Firsts are tough ya'll.

And the white space with the ever patiently blinking cursor, is absolutely paralyzing. I've been putting off starting the blog part of our website for exactly 12 months because I had no idea what to write about. But, I guess the best place to start is at the beginning and tell you a little bit about what our boutique is all about.

About a year ago, my friend Carren and I decided to rent a little booth in an antique mall in downtown Magnolia, Texas. She is a florist and can make flowers arrangements that are just out of this world. (You'll see them on our social feeds.) I was going to craft, and paint furniture and more and then I realized that as a mom of 3, there's no way I have time for that.

So, Carren asked me what I would really love to sell and after not much thought, the answer was clear, clothes. I have loved clothes and putting outfits together since forever.

So, with a little seed money from my grandmother, I placed my first order, hung them on a laundry rack and hoped for the best.

My inventory grew steadily. About 9 months later, at a play date, Kendra and I talked about taking the business online and so we jumped into that headfirst with a Facebook Live sale. We literally pulled some things out of the booth, said a prayer, and pushed Go Live. And now here we are.

Our Mission

Seeds and Sycamores is dedicated to three main things:

Modesty: There's just really something to be said about a dress that covers all the stuff. Who wants to be constantly yanking tops up and pulling hemlines down? We love sleeves (seriously, no one wants to see my off-white bra strap!) We know you can build a wardrobe that brings glory to God and still feel relevant and stylish.

Encouragement: True beauty comes from a pure heart. We don't have a dress in stock that can compare! As much fun as we have with clothes and fashion, we are always reaching for a relationship with God and trying to please him!

Doing Good: We are committed providing you high quality, ethically-made clothing items. We also use 10% of our profit to fund small business loans for women in third world countries. It's just the perfect fit.

Big Dreams + Brave Hearts

Our shop name, Seeds and Sycamores, is inspired by a parable Jesus told his disciples and a story of a special encounter with Jesus we read about in the Bible. This is the foundation for what our boutique is all about.

Seeds represents the mustard seed parable, that ever elusive parable where Jesus tells his disciples that even with a little tiny bit of faith, with God you can move mountains. What an amazing promise! This boutique is built on that little bit of faith that with God, all things are possible!

The Sycamores part of our name is inspired by the story of Zaccheus climbing in the sycamore tree because he wanted to see Jesus. So many times, we settle for just a glimpse of Jesus. Fear keeps us hiding in the crowd and this busy world blocks our view.

We want to have a heart like Zaccheus who, despite what everyone else was doing and even at the risk of calling attention to his shortcomings, had the guts to climb the tree for the clearest view of His Savior!

A little about us.

“So, you want to go the mall sometime.” It’s funny how just the most simple statement can begin a friendship! Kendra and I both moved to The Woodlands in 2008, within 1 day of each other and began going to the same church. We were both new, loved to shop and eat sno cones and were school teachers. We have a ton of fun together, as you will see if you ever catch one of our lives.

So, here's a quick bio about each of us.
